Wall Insulation Services

Cold walls, high energy bills, and rooms that never stay comfortable are often signs of missing or degraded wall insulation. For most existing homes, adding wall insulation does not require removing drywall.York Home Performance installs wall insulation for homeowners across Pennsylvania and Maryland using injection foam and dense-pack methods that are minimally invasive and effective. We are a BPI-certified contractor with over 13 years of experience.

Why Wall Insulation Makes a Difference

Most homeowners focus on the attic first, but exterior walls account for a significant share of heat loss in older homes. A home with properly insulated walls holds temperature more consistently, runs its HVAC system less, and is more comfortable throughout.

Signs your walls may need insulation:

  • Exterior walls that feel cold to the touch in winter
  • Rooms on exterior corners that are harder to heat or cool
  • High energy bills that persist even after addressing the attic
  • A home built before 1980 when wall insulation was often minimal or absent
  • Thermal imaging showing heat loss through wall surfaces

Wall Insulation Methods

Injection Foam

Our primary method for insulating existing closed walls. Small holes are drilled from the exterior, foam is injected to fill the cavity completely, and the holes are patched and finished. Minimal disruption to the interior.

Dense-Pack Cellulose

Blown into existing wall cavities under pressure through small access holes. Fills the full cavity with no voids and provides strong air resistance. An effective option for walls where injection foam is not the best fit.

Batt Insulation

Used when walls are already open due to renovation or new construction. Fiberglass or mineral wool batts installed in exposed stud cavities before drywall is closed.

What to Expect

We inspect the wall cavities

We assess construction, cavity depth, and condition of any existing insulation before recommending a method.

We give you a clear recommendation

You receive a written scope with the material and approach we recommend.

We drill small access holes

In most cases from the exterior, minimizing interior disruption.

We fill the cavities completely

Material is installed to fill the entire cavity with no voids.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wall Insulation

In most cases no. We drill small access holes from the exterior, inject or blow insulation to fill the wall cavity, and patch the holes afterward. Drywall removal is only needed in specific situations where the wall construction does not allow the standard approach.

Walls that feel cold to the touch in winter, rooms on exterior corners that are hard to keep comfortable, and high energy bills that persist after attic improvements are all signs. Thermal imaging during a home energy audit shows heat loss through wall surfaces accurately.

Injection foam is specifically designed for retrofitting insulation into existing closed wall cavities. It is injected as a liquid that expands to fill the space and cures in place, bonding to the wall framing and sheathing. It is different from spray foam, which is used in open cavities.

Yes. Dense-pack cellulose and injection foam both provide meaningful sound attenuation in addition to thermal performance. Homeowners often notice a reduction in exterior noise and between-room noise transfer after wall insulation.

We serve homeowners across Pennsylvania and Maryland including York County and surrounding PA counties, and the greater Baltimore and central Maryland area.
